Tuning in to God’s voice

Kia ora whānau,

On Sunday we listened to the passages from Psalm 81: 8-16 and Matthew 13:31-33,44-52. The theme during this season is about our roots going deep and bearing fruit. Mark has been challenging us about what it looks like to live in the story where God is real and restored relationships are possible. One practical aspect of us connecting with a real God is hearing His voice. Taking small steps is helpful instead of facing overwhelming challenges. Connecting with God’s Word for 7 minutes a day and being silent for 7 minutes a day are ways we can put ourselves in a position to hear God’s voice.

This idea of hearing is similar to tuning into a radio station. When you know that you want to listen to that certain station only concentration and careful maneuvering of the dial will bring the clearest reception. These days many people rarely bother with radio stations anymore. We want to choose what we’re going to listen to without surprises. But, what if we’re also doing that with God? It’s totally possible that we’ve made a playlist of favorites in our spiritual lives so we don’t get any surprises from God.

Intentionally choosing to engage in community makes it more likely that we’ll hear God’s voice and that He’ll surprise us. Being in community also brings even greater clarity as we listen together. Being with people who long to hear God’s voice stirs an even greater desire inside of us as individuals. It reinforces our need for living out this God story with others.

Next week we look toward taking steps into a 24 hour prayer space at St Tom’s, and as a church our anticipation is growing for hearing God’s voice and learning to respond.

In Christ,

Wendy Schneider
